RAILWAY enthusiasts are on track to complete a long-awaited extension.

Volunteers at Steeple Grange Light Railway, near Wirksworth, have begun the final push to extend the line to Middleton. The track is now within 200 metres of a terminus close to the National Stone Centre.

The railway, built on the trackbed of a branch of the old Cromford and High Peak Railway, began construction of the narrow gauge line in 1986.

Martin Smith, of Steeple Grange, said: “The final push will see the construction of a new embankment to give us an easier gradient to a new station close to Middleton Main Street. We are operating trains up to this new piece of track every Saturday and Sunday until the end of September.”
